Each individual can make a difference, and we need your help!! When you send us your mailing address, we will send you a FREE copy of the poster and the fact sheet. We cannot send more than one copy per person (postage is expensive) but we urge you to make color copies, and black and white ones are okay Too, and hang them up in as many places as you can. Outside of restaurants, along street medians, at the heads of walking or hiking trails, on your school campus or in your office building’s lobby, at the gatehouse for the beach, and pretty much anywhere you can think of are good places to hang the poster because butts are littered everywhere. Please write to us for more ideas of where or how to hang up the poster and fact sheet and to let us know how it’s going. You can also:

Conduct clean-ups and use a tally-sheet to record the type of litter that you find. You can clean up a littered area before the poster has been hung and then after and compare the amount of cigarette butts found. This was done by the city of Boca Raton on the beaches and the posters were found to have a large impact on reducing litter and were used permanently after. Let us know what your results are!!

Learn about the structure of your local government and how it operates. Contact city or town officials (including the mayor or first select-person and members of environmental committees and groups) and ask for their support of the campaign and cooperation of bringing awareness to your area. If possible, the head of your local government might even let you speak to the entire board at a council meeting. We have done this in both of the towns that we have lived in and think that it is a great way to raise awareness in your area and get good public speaking experience. Let us know if you want any tips on this idea.

Learn about the way the legislature operates and who your local and federal representatives and senators are. Write to them about a bill idea that would force the cigarette manufacturers to take responsibility for the problems caused by their product by providing a disposable ashtray or similar mechanism in each package of cigarettes sold. Urge them to propose or support it! If they are interested, we have convincing materials and facts that we will be eager to share with you-let us know!

Research the problem specifically in your area – any way that you can think of, be creative and brainstorm.

Draw or create your own posters that convey the message of how harmful, widespread, or serious the problem of littered cigarette butts is – remember that lack of awareness is the root of the problem. Most smokers who drop their butts do not realize that they are littering because they do so purely out of a habitual action, but seeing a new and creative poster will break them of their habit and reduce litter. Hang these posters, along with the No Butts About It ones, in your town. (you may use the No Butts About It slogan or another one that you can come up with-it doesn’t matter)

Distribute the bumper stickers that we have created and make some of your own. During traffic jams or just on the streets everyone notices and reads bumper stickers – this is a great way to raise awareness.

Learn new facts about cigarette butt litter and create a fact sheet of your own. This can be distributed anywhere that the poster is hung. Reading large statistics and unbelievable facts makes a huge impression on someone, and is likely to make an impact on their habits.

Using photos, statistics, and anything that you have learned through your experience create a slideshow presentation for your school, business, or other receptive groups of people. It would be a great idea to detail the activities that you have done or plan to do to let others know how they can help, too.

Brainstorm any other possible ways to spread the word in your town and surrounding areas, maybe even support the growth of other No Butts About It chapters in surrounding schools. Since awareness is the key issue, raising awareness by spreading the word in any way that you can is the main objective!!)
