Please sign our petition to support requiring cigarette manufacturers to print "Please Dispose of Butts Properly" on every package of cigarettes to spread awareness of and end littered cigarettes. For a holiday present one year, our parents signed us up to be an adopt a shore family in Boca Raton, Florida. We were responsible for cleaning up a certain portion of the beach four times per year. As we did more and more cleanups, we noticed that we kept picking up massive amounts of cigarette butts. We couldn.t understand why adults would take the time to throw out gum wrappers but would simply drop their butts without a second thought. We decided to keep a tally of the different kinds of garbage that we collected, and we found that cigarette butts hugely outnumbered all other types of litter, which is a fact that is verified by the Center for Marine Conservation.s annual coastal cleanups. This problem was disgusting to us, and we did not want it to continue on our beach, so we created a poster that our city began to use on all beaches. We also found free disposable ashtrays that were handed out at the beach gatehouses. We were psyched because it was making a difference by reducing the amount of butts littered, but we realized that cigarette butt litter was not isolated to only our beach, but is found on all beaches, parks, city sidewalks, school campuses, and all over the place. When our family moved up to Connecticut, we saw how the problem of littered cigarette butts plagues all of America, and even the entire world. We modified our poster so that it applied to littered butts everywhere, and it is now available to be downloaded off this website. The free disposable ashtrays are no longer available due to the manufacturing company.s making a budget cut (we are still urging the company to reverse this decision). The poster is now accompanied by an informative fact sheet because the real issue is awareness. Our mom told us that when she was a kid, litter was dropped everywhere. Whole bags of fast food wrappers were thrown out car windows. Then anti-littering campaigns raised awareness, and soon, the litterers were in the minority. Now, nobody even litters something as small as a gum wrapper. Once smokers become aware that dropping their cigarette butts is actually harmful litter, they will quickly change their habits . most smokers simply do not realize the consequences of their conduct. Our campaign is currently being used all over the country, and even in places internationally. And it is greatly raising awareness of this easily changed habit. We . everyone who helps out on this campaign - are making a difference.
